RDS has done a great job on our lawn. In just one year we have seen a vast improvement. Knowing that it takes time and a few years of treatment to see the best results, we are very happy with the results so far. Also, the pest treatment allows us to be in the yard without the worry of mosquitos and other pests. Highly recommend.

I have been very pleased with the services I have received. I have only been with RDS for almost a year now, and my lawn has seen a remarkable improvement. Prior to having RDS I didn't have any professional treatment for at least 5 years plus. So clearly there was a ton of work needed to get my lawn back in shape. I look forward to seeing this continual improvement. The service technicians are knowledgeable, informative, and strive to satisfy any questions or concerns I might have. From my experience so far they are a class act.

Lawn Fertilization and Weed Control Program

Our lawn fertilization and weed control program is broken down into 7 sessions throughout the year to keep your lawn healthy at all times. Depending on whether you have warm- or cold-season grass, our program will be adjusted to fit your needs. Below is a breakdown of what will be performed during each session.

Round 1 (Date Range 1/5 to 2/9)

  • Cold-Season Grasses – We will apply a slow-release fertilizer at a rate of ½ lb per 1,000 square feet. This fertilizer will be the base for the early season for 30-45 days. Fertilizing your cold-season grass this early in the season will help eliminate and prevent yellowing caused by colder temperature. Deweeding at this step will entail spraying a mixture to control winter weeds that started growing during the previous fall.
  • Warm-Season Grasses – We will not fertilize warm-season grasses at this time, as it is still too early in the season. Cold-season lawns should have fewer weeds at this time if pre-emergent control was applied in the fall. We will check to make sure we remove any weeds that may have survived the winter.

Round 2 (Date Range 2/10 to 3/22)

  • Cold-Season Grasses – This step will see twice as much slow-release fertilizer applied compared to the previous step. This application of fertilizer will serve as the base for the next 60 days of the season. Pre-emergent weed control will be applied to cold-season grasses at the time, as well as a herbicide to control any winter weeds that are still present.
  • Warm-Season Grasses – The fertilization process will not yet begin for warm-season lawns, but we will apply a pre-emergent at this time to kill any weeds from the previous season. Crabgrass is one of the most common weeds found in the Mt. Holly area. The effects of our weed control at this step should last 8-10 weeks.

Round 3 (Date Range 3/22 to 4/30)

  • Cold-Season Grasses – As your lawn enters the stressful season, we will apply another ½ lb per 1,000 square feet, and the treatment should feed your lawn for 45-60 days. This round of fertilizer will be lower in nitrogen than previous applications. We will also apply a combination of humic acid and sea kelp that will help oxygenate your soil and extend the nitrogen release, which will help green-up your lawn. We will then apply a liquid aeration to allow more nutrients into the soil, and we will spot-spray any weed growth.
  • Warm-Season Grasses – This round will see the first application of fertilizer for warm-season grass. We will apply 1 lb per 1,000 square feet of granular slow-release fertilizer that will last up to 60 days. We will continue to spray any weed growth with herbicide.

Round 4 (Date Range 5/1 to 6/9)

  • Cold-Season Grasses – This step will focus on weed control for cold-season lawns. Pre-emergents will kill any weed seeds from the previous season. A fungicide will then be applied to keep your lawn free of any fungi as humidity begins to rise and rain becomes more frequent. Visible weeds will then be spot-sprayed with a herbicide.
  • Warm-Season Grasses – We will continue our fertilizer treatment with ½ lb per 1,000 square feet of the granular slow-release fertilizer. Pre-emergent and herbicide are also still applied at this step, as necessary.

Round 5 (Date Range 6/10 to 7/19)

  • Cold-Season Grasses – We will apply iron to all turf areas at this stage. Iron helps relieve stress and give nutrients to the turf during the high heat and drought conditions of this season. Spot spraying herbicide will continue, as necessary.
  • Warm-Season Grasses – Another round of granular slow-release fertilizer will be applied at this stage, and we will also apply a soil conditioner aimed at dethatching your yard. This conditioner will be a mixture of humic acid, molasses, and yeast, which will compost into the soil’s thatch layer. Spot spraying herbicide will continue, as necessary.

Round 6 (Date Range 7/20 to 8/28)

  • Cold-Season Grasses – A granular slow-release fertilizer will be applied that is designed to help your cold-season lawn handle the stress of summer heat by improving root development, adding green color, and increasing the amount of phosphorus and potassium in your soil that will be beneficial for the fall seeding season. Weeds will be sprayed with a herbicide, as necessary.
  • Warm-Season Grasses – This round will see an application of controlled-release liquid nitrogen and other micronutrients for your warm-season grass. We will also apply the first fall pre-emergent to ensure that winter weed growth is prevented as much as possible.

Round 7 (Date Range 11/1 to 12/15)

  • Cold-Season Grasses – This final round of our service will include a granular fertilizer that will best prepare your lawn for the cold temperatures to come. This blend will help your grass develop a deep and healthy root system, add green color, and add potassium that will help your lawn avoid damage from the cold. We will not be applying herbicide to cold-season grass at this stage. If we seeded your lawn in the fall, the seeds will need more time to germinate before they can withstand herbicides.
  • Warm-Season Grasses – The final step for warm-season grasses is to apply a second round fall pre-emergent to ensure your lawn will be protected against weeds over the winter. We will also apply a final round of herbicide for any weeds that may still be present.

Watering Plan

We do not suggest any irrigation of your newly fertilized lawn until after the third visit (3/22 to 4/30). The rain that Mt. Holly receives earlier in the season will provide enough water. Any further irrigation could lead to overwatering. After our third visit, water your lawn 2-3 times per week up until our fourth visit. From rounds 4-6, water your lawn every other day. Watering is not recommended from round 7 on into the winter months. A moderate to heavy rainfall can and should replace a watering session during any of these times. Also, do not forget the following recommendations to ensure the best results possible:

  • Rotating Irrigation Head – 25 minutes per zone
  • Fixed Irrigation Head – 15 minutes per zone
  • Hand Watering/Hose and Sprinkler – 25-30 minutes per zone

The Importance of Weed Control

No fertilization service is complete unless it includes a detailed weed control plan, such as the fertilization and weed control plan we have laid out. When applying fertilizer to your lawn, or when your lawn is absorbing natural nutrients it encounters, the presence of weeds means less nutrients for your lawn. Weeds, such as the crabgrass that is commonly found in Mt. Holly and the surrounding areas, compete with your grass and your plants for the nutrients you are trying to provide for them. If weeds are not dealt with and are allowed to grow, even the most thorough fertilization methods will see poor results. Weeds will steal the nourishment you are trying to give your lawn, and your grass and plants will start to die. Our weed control plan will guarantee the best fertilization results!
